It sounds like you got a working EDK II build environment setup, but...

Did you by any chance see these instructions:

It should be pretty quick and easy to setup EDK II on a recent Linux...

It sounds like the referenced training is leading you to think you
should need to rebuild binutils, but I don't think that is the case
most of the time.
