Thanks!  That is very interesting.

I have been able to shave about 30 second off the boot time of the
Ubuntu live CD by:
1. Eliminating most delays related to floppy disks
2. Implement ATAPI DMA access for the CD-ROM.

For 1, it impacted the time of firmware boot.  (Several seconds.)
For 2, it impacted grub loading the kernel/initrd.

Unfortunately, I've not been able to cleanup these to include them in OVMF.

But, it still did not match the legacy boot time, and perhaps your
discovery of the kernel boot time accounts for this.  I'll try to
discover the cause.
